On one of the quieter streets in the north end of the Old Quarter, the Ha Long is a great base for exploration. You might feel like you've come to stay at the YMCA when you board the rattle-trap elevator, but its just no frills, clean, and affordable in this older mini hotel. Its a good place to get your bearings in town, and its far enough away from the lake that the hassling touts seem to leave this part of the Old Quarter alone (a big relief).
